Abstract This study was conducted in the Delta Toker with the aim of assessing agricultural areas and natural vegetation cover within the Delta. The study focuses on evaluating changes in crop structure between 1986 and 2019, identifying the driving forces behind these changes, addressing challenges faced by farmers, and proposing strategies for regional agricultural development. A mixed method approach including the analysis of remote sensing data and socioeconomic survey was implemented in this research. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results obtained from the questionnaires revealed a decline in cultivated areas due to various factors, encompassing natural causes such as aridity, desert encroachment, soil erosion, invasive plant species like mesquite, as well as economic (financial constraints) and social factors (population migration). Fluctuations in the agricultural area were observed, with a substantial increase in planted area (611 km²) in 2019 attributed to enhanced irrigation and higher rainfall, and a significant decrease (257.4 km²) in 1995 due to the proliferation of mesquite trees and wartime circumstances preventing farming. The study identified a persistent spread of mesquite trees, particularly reaching 307 km² in 2013, which was reduced to about 262 km² in 2018 due to control programs. The study concluded with several recommendations including river flow management for equitable water distribution, effective strategies to eradicate mesquite trees, maintenance to address Delta challenges and improve livelihoods diversifying income sources.of field cleanliness, management of invasive species, controlled animal grazing, and fostering community participation and agricultural guidance en_US
