Abstract:
Abstract:
A huge mass residue is produced from banana stem waste plantation farms. Bananas produce in are year about 2 million tons of banana, all of which is a waste due to non-availability of suitable technology for its commercial the utilization. The aim of this work is to characterize banana tree residues and use it in pulping and combustion processes. The soda-anthraquinone pulping of the banana tree residues can be simulated by polynomial models, and then predict the pulp properties (yield , Kappa number ) as a function of operating variables (temperature 170 to 200°C, time 60 to 120 min and soda concentration( 7 to 10%) with errors less than 20%. Operating under optimal conditions (170°C, 90) min and 7 to 10% soda) , a pulp with 21 to 46 % yield , 33.2 to 42.5 Kappa number
2.6 to 3.85 N tensile index , 12.3 to 21.48 bar burst index , thickness 9.36 to 10.73µ and 4.83 mNm2/g tear index was obtained.
The chemical analyses indicated high cellulose and different lignin contents are banana compared to some other non-wood fiber resource. The results demonstrated that the banana waste has potential value for pulping.
